The upcoming game in the Phantasy Star series, published by Sega, will be released on Microsoft Windows on July 4 in Japan. Phantasy Star Online 2 has been confirmed to be free-to-play. The open beta testing began on June 21 and ended on July 2. Characters created by players during open beta will not be wiped, and will be carried over to the live servers.
There are also plans for release on other platforms: for iOS and Android in winter 2012; and PlayStation Vita in 2013. Sega also announced that the number of participants for the June 21 open beta had crossed the 500,000 mark and that the game had reached a maximum connection of 80,000 players, simultaneously.
