The Guitarion, being developed at Chiba University‘s Graduate School of Engineering in Japan, is a guitar that can be played by hemiplegics. Hemiplegia is the total paralysis of the arm, leg, and trunk on the same side of the body. People with unilateral paralysis can still play the guitar with Guitarion by using the unaffected side of their body.
The guitar is held by the non-disabled hand in the neck to play the chords. Then a device with solenoid is placed on the guitar’s body which plucks the strings of the guitar. The solenoid is attached with a foot switch that, when pressed, will trigger the picks that will pluck the guitar strings. Check out the video below.
