A group of scientists at Chiba Insititute of Technology, led by Shuro Nakajima, has developed a robotic wheelchair that can climb steps and overcome various other obstacles. Using only a joystick and its four-wheel drive and five axes, the robot can make variety of movements. With its sensors on its feet, the robot automatically assesses the surrounding and make the appropriate movements. It is currently named RT-Mover P-type.
Though the wheelchair is currently only on its prototype, its functions and capabilities are impressive which can lift its wheels to go over obstacles, adjust the seat to stay level when traversing uneven terrain, and turn while standing in one spot.
